About the Teraoka Itoten Main House

The Teraoka Itoten Main House (寺岡糸店主屋, Teraoka Itoten Shuoku) is a 2-storey timber residence built in 1933 in Tenmyōchō, Sano City, Tochigi Prefecture, and entered on Japan's register of Registered Tangible Cultural Properties on December 5, 2019. It has a tiled roof and a building area of 125 m².

The house is joined to the rear of the shop on its west side, so home and business form one continuous block. If the shop, built the same year, was where the thread trade was done, the main house was where the household lived.

Layered Eaves on the Teraoka Itoten Main House

The Teraoka Itoten Main House has a hipped roof of pantiles, and on both floors a lean-to roof, or Geya, wraps around all four sides. Two tiers of eaves sit beneath the main roof, banding the two-storey block with thin horizontal lines.

Toward the east end of the south side, an entrance porch with a hip-and-gable roof marks the way in, a small change of roof form that gives the front door its own presence.

The walls are built in the Shinkabe manner, with the timber posts left visible and the panels between them plastered white. Clapboarding runs along the lower walls, the same pairing of finishes used on the shop, so the two linked buildings read as a set.

Shoin Style Below, Sukiya Style Above

Inside, the Teraoka Itoten Main House changes character from floor to floor. According to the Agency for Cultural Affairs, the ground floor is finished in a manner derived from Shoin-zukuri, the formal style of Japanese reception rooms, while the upper floor follows Sukiya-zukuri, the lighter style that grew out of tea-house design and favors natural materials.

Details of the individual rooms have not been published. Still, placing the formal manner downstairs and the relaxed one upstairs within a single home is a telling choice for a merchant household of the early Showa years.

Why the Teraoka Itoten Main House Was Registered

The Teraoka Itoten Main House was listed as a structure that contributes to the historic landscape of the country. The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes it as creating a refined residential scene.

Where the shop gives weight to the street, the main house shapes the view within the property. With its double band of eaves and its porch, it forms the centerpiece of the Teraoka Itoten residence.

Seeing the Teraoka Itoten Main House

The Teraoka Itoten Main House is a private residence owned by the company Teraoka Itoten, and its interior is not open to the public (checked October 2026). We found no notice of occasions to see the shoin-style or sukiya-style rooms. Because the house stands behind the shop inside the plot, we could not confirm how much of it can be seen from the road. There is no official guidance on photography, so please avoid capturing the household's daily life. Directions are on the Teraoka Itoten page.
