A Street-Front Office with Scratch Tile
The Nakawa Shoten Office (中和商店事務所) is a timber office of two storeys and part single storey from the late Taisho period at Nakawa Shoten in Sarada, Ikeda-cho, Miyoshi City, Tokushima Prefecture, which in 2019 was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs records slate and partly tiled roofs and a building area of 140 square metres, altered in 1957; it was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape.
The Agency notes that it faces west onto Sugio-dori in Ikeda.
Structure
According to the Agency, a single-storey north-south wing is joined to the north of the two-storey office, with living quarters behind.
The ground floor of the front is faced in scratch tile and the rest finished in brushed mortar. The office rooms are Western in style and the living quarters Japanese.
What to Look For
The Agency sees it as shaping the postwar streetscape of the town. Look at the scratch-tile facing of the ground floor.
The bottling room of the brewery storehouse adjoins it, linking the street front to the brewery behind.
