The Core of the Brewery
The Nakawa Shoten Sake Brewery Storehouse (中和商店酒造蔵) is a two-storey timber brewery storehouse built around 1926 at Nakawa Shoten in Sarada, Ikeda-cho, Miyoshi City, Tokushima Prefecture, which in 2019 was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs records a tiled roof and a building area of 499 square metres; it was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape.
The Agency describes it as the core of the brewery, at the centre of the site east of the office.
Structure
According to the Agency, it is a two-storey gabled building with a pantiled roof, L-shaped in plan, with the storage room at the centre and the koji room in the southeast corner.
A lean-to on the east holds the washing area and boiler room, and a bottling room on the west adjoins the office.
What to Look For
The Agency notes that it conveys the character of a sake brewery well. At the heart of the site, the shikomi storehouse, brewers' quarters and chimney all attach to it.
Notice how the stages of brewing, from washing and steaming to the koji room and bottling, are arranged within this one building.
Visiting
These are working brewery buildings, and no official information on interior access could be found.
