A Large Fermentation Storehouse with a Log Roof Frame
The Nakawa Shoten Shikomi Storehouse (中和商店仕込蔵) is a single-storey timber fermentation storehouse of the mid-Meiji period at Nakawa Shoten in Sarada, Ikeda-cho, Miyoshi City, Tokushima Prefecture, which in 2019 was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs records a tiled roof and a building area of 282 square metres; it was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape.
The Agency places it at the north edge of the site, meeting the brewery storehouse along the western half of its south side.
Structure
According to the Agency, it is a large single-storey gabled building with a pantiled roof. Inside is a single room where tanks stand on a concrete floor.
The roof frame is unusual: logs are set horizontally and diagonally and braced with struts to create a large open space.
What to Look For
The Agency calls it indispensable to brewing. Its unusual roof frame of horizontal and diagonal logs spans the hall of tanks.
Dating from the mid-Meiji period, it predates the company's move into sake; in an interview with the tourism association, the owner said the brewery uses the storehouses of the former tobacco works.
Visiting
These are working brewery buildings, and no official information on interior access could be found.
