A Tall, Large Soto Zen Main Hall

The Daijuji Temple Main Hall (大樹寺本堂, Daijuji Hondo) is a single-storey timber main hall completed in 1920 at Daijuji in Fukuchi, Yazu Town, Tottori Prefecture, which in 2024 was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property.

The Agency for Cultural Affairs records a tiled roof and a building area of 256 square metres; it was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape.

Yazu Town notes that work began in 1918 and that it is the oldest of the temple's buildings.

Structure

According to the Agency, it stands at the centre of the precinct facing west, with a hip-and-gable pantiled roof and the entrance on the long side.

The front porch has curved rafters, and its brackets and struts are richly carved. Inside, an outer sanctuary at the front, a great hall in the middle and an inner sanctuary at the back follow one another; the great hall has a coved coffered ceiling.

Yazu Town notes that the frame is of local zelkova, chestnut and pine, built with the best Inaba building techniques of the day.

What to Look For

The Agency notes that the tall, large hall shapes the historic landscape of the area. Look up at the high roof from the centre of the precinct.

The curved porch rafters and carved brackets are best seen from directly in front.
