Daijuji Temple Bell Tower

A Bell Tower Marking a Recast Bell

The Daijuji Temple Bell Tower (大樹寺鐘楼, Daijuji Shoro) is a timber bell tower built in 1954 at Daijuji in Fukuchi, Yazu Town, Tottori Prefecture, which in 2024 was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property.

The Agency for Cultural Affairs records a single-storey timber structure with a copper roof and a building area of 9.9 square metres; it was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape.

The Agency notes that it was built to mark the recasting of the temple bell, which had been surrendered for metal during the war.

Structure

According to the Agency, it stands southwest of the main hall, facing east on a base, with a hip-and-gable copper roof.

Round columns rise from stone bases, leaning slightly inward, and a tie rail curving upward at the centre crosses the front. The columns carry three-bearing bracket sets, the eaves have double close-set rafters with frog-leg struts between the brackets, and the ceiling is coffered.

What to Look For

The Agency sees the bell tower as part of the temple's scene. Yazu Town calls it a symbol of Daijuji, making a fine picture with the Uraku camellia in spring.

Notice the inward-leaning columns and the front tie rail arching up at its centre.
