About the Mikamo Family Residence New Storehouse
The Mikamo Family Residence New Storehouse (美甘家住宅新蔵, Mikamo-ke Jūtaku Shingura) is a plastered storehouse built in 1861 in Tokorogo, Daisen, Tottori Prefecture, and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan in 2009. It stands west of the main house, beside the back gate.
Despite the name, it is the older of the only two Mikamo buildings dated to a specific year, the other being the 1889 Treasure Storehouse. Put up near the close of the Edo period, it has kept the name "new" ever since; Daisen Town also places it in the late Edo period.
How the New Storehouse Is Built
It is a two-storey Dozo-zukuri storehouse with its ridge running north to south, 5.9 m by 4.0 m, with a building area of 31 m². The gabled pantile roof is an Okiyane, a separate roof set above the plastered body of the storehouse, and here it is raised high. Tiled Hisashi eaves wrap the east and north sides.
The walls are finished in white Shikkui plaster, with double doors on the east face. Inside, each floor is a single open room lined with vertical boards. Like the main house and the Front Gate, the ridge carries Kimachi stone.
What to Look For on the Mikamo New Storehouse
The thing to notice on the Mikamo Family Residence New Storehouse is the height of the roof. A detached roof of this kind leaves a gap between the roof and the plastered body, and here it is lifted well clear. The national database says the Treasure Storehouse raises its roof in the same way.
White walls, tiled eaves on two sides and the stone-capped ridge tie the storehouse visually to the main house. It was registered as contributing to the historic landscape.
Viewing the Mikamo Family Residence New Storehouse
The Mikamo Family Residence New Storehouse belongs to a private home and the interior is not open. It sits deep in the plot, west of the main house by the back gate, and is hard to see from the main street to the east. Do not enter the grounds.
