About the Mikamo Family Residence Warehouse

The Mikamo Family Residence Warehouse (美甘家住宅倉庫, Mikamo-ke Jūtaku Sōko) is an early-Meiji outbuilding in Tokorogo, Daisen, Tottori Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan in 2009. It stands north of the main house, end to end with the Former Stable to its east.

The national database dates it to the early Meiji era, while Daisen Town groups it with the New Storehouse as a late-Edo building. This article follows the national database.

How the Mikamo Warehouse Is Built

It measures 14 m by 8.8 m, with a building area of 111 m², second in size only to the main house among the seven Mikamo buildings. The gabled pantile roof sweeps low over the south side in a deep eave.

The two halves are different. The northern 4.0 m is two storeys, with three rooms below and a single large room above. The southern half has no walls at all, an open bay under the deep eave. The registration lists it as single-storey with a partial upper floor.

What to Look For on the Mikamo Warehouse

What makes the Mikamo Family Residence Warehouse worth noticing is the way it puts closed storage and an open working space under one roof: storage in the two-storey northern half and an open southern bay usable for loading and work, with the long south eave sheltering it.

Built in line with the stable next door, it forms a row of outbuildings behind the main house. The national database treats it as one of the elements that make up the estate, and it was registered as contributing to the historic landscape.

Viewing the Mikamo Family Residence Warehouse

The Mikamo Family Residence Warehouse belongs to a private home and the interior is not open. It sits at the back of the plot north of the main house, so it is hard to see in full from the street. Do not enter the grounds.
