About the Mikamo Family Residence Treasure Storehouse

The Mikamo Family Residence Treasure Storehouse (美甘家住宅宝蔵, Mikamo-ke Jūtaku Takaragura) is a storehouse built in 1889 in Tokorogo, Daisen, Tottori Prefecture, and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan in 2009. It stands on the south edge of the estate, just east of center, and is one of only two of the seven Mikamo buildings dated to a specific year.

The national database notes that, together with the water channel and hedge along the street, it shapes the outward face of the estate on the south side.

Two Descriptions That Do Not Match

The Agency for Cultural Affairs database is not consistent about the Mikamo Family Residence Treasure Storehouse. Its structure field lists a two-storey Dozo-zukuri storehouse with a tiled roof and a building area of 23 m². The descriptive note for the same entry describes a single-storey timber building 13 m by 4.0 m under a gabled pantile roof, with a gateway near the west end hung with double doors and a wicket door (Kugurido), and a room occupying the eastern 8.8 m.

A building 13 m by 4.0 m would cover about 52 m², not 23 m². The note for the New Storehouse, meanwhile, says it raises a detached protective roof (Okiyane) high "like the Treasure Storehouse", which treats the Treasure Storehouse as a plastered storehouse.

Published sources do not settle which description is right. This article gives both, and the Basic Information table uses the 23 m² figure from the structure field.

What to Look For

According to the note, the walls are finished in black plaster above vertical board wainscoting. Against the white plaster of the main house and the New Storehouse, the black walls give the south side of the estate a different tone.

A water channel runs in front of the storehouse, with a hedge alongside. Irrigation channels thread through Tokorogo past the houses, and the Treasure Storehouse is best seen as part of that street scene of channel, hedge and wall.

Viewing the Mikamo Family Residence Treasure Storehouse

The Mikamo Family Residence Treasure Storehouse belongs to a private home and the interior is not open. Because it lines the street on the south edge of the plot, you can see the exterior across the channel and hedge from the southern road. Do not enter the grounds.
