About the Mikamo Family Residence Former Stable

The Mikamo Family Residence Former Stable (美甘家住宅旧厩, Mikamo-ke Jūtaku Kyū-umaya) is an early-Meiji stable in Tokorogo, Daisen, Tottori Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan in 2009. It stands north of the main house, in line with the Warehouse and just east of it.

Tokorogo has long been a farming village on the lower slopes of Mount Daisen, and some households kept livestock within their own grounds. The Mikamo stable keeps that side of rural life visible inside the estate.

How the Mikamo Stable Is Built

It is a single-storey timber building with a gabled pantile roof running east to west, 7.3 m by 8.0 m, with a building area of 59 m².

Inside, the stalls, called maya locally, are arranged in a U shape. The northern part has a mezzanine where fodder was stored. Animals and their feed were kept under one roof.

According to the national database, some members were replaced in repairs, but the building keeps its earlier character. It was registered as contributing to the historic landscape.

What to Look For on the Mikamo Former Stable

The interest of the Mikamo Family Residence Former Stable lies in how it uses both floor and height. The U-shaped stalls take the ground, and the mezzanine over the north side holds the hay: fodder above, animals below, fitted neatly into a modest footprint.

It is also deeper than it is long, 8.0 m against 7.3 m. Set on the same ridge line as the Warehouse, it completes a row of working buildings behind the main house.

Viewing the Mikamo Family Residence Former Stable

The Mikamo Family Residence Former Stable belongs to a private home and the interior is not open. It sits at the back of the plot north of the main house, so it is hard to see in full from the street. Do not enter the grounds.
