What Is Kokokuji Temple Abbot's Quarters?
Kokokuji Temple Abbot's Quarters (興国寺方丈, Kōkoku-ji Hōjō) is the Hōjō standing east of the Dharma Hall at Kokokuji in Monzen, Yura Town, Wakayama Prefecture; built in 1698, it became a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on August 6, 2025. It is both the oldest and, at 272 square meters, the largest of the five registered buildings.
A hojo began as the abbot's residence, and in Zen temples it also serves for receiving guests and holding ceremonies. The Abbot's Quarters faces west and stands beside the priests' kitchen. It was enlarged in 1838.
Six Rooms and a Curved-Gable Entrance
Kokokuji Temple Abbot's Quarters has a hipped tiled roof (Yosemune-zukuri) over a ridge running north to south. Toward the south end of the west front, an entrance porch projects under a curved, bow-shaped gable facing outward.
The plan is six rooms in three rows of two, with a broad veranda on three sides. The west row holds the central ceremonial room, and the northeast room is a formal reception room with an alcove, staggered shelves (Chigaidana) and a built-in writing desk (Tsukeshoin). The orderly six-room grid is the classic arrangement of a Zen abbot's quarters.
Look at the outer wall and you will see a post at every bay. The Agency for Cultural Affairs singles this out as an older practice preserved in the building.
Why It Was Registered
The Agency for Cultural Affairs registered Kokokuji Temple Abbot's Quarters as a model of architectural form, under number 30-0409. Its description praises it as a large abbot's quarters that keeps old features, such as the posts set at every bay along the outer wall.
Built about 110 years after the fire of 1585, it is the earliest of the five registered buildings and nearly a century older than the Dharma Hall, recording an early stage in the temple's long Edo-period recovery.

The entrance of Kokokuji Temple Abbot's Quarters is easy to see if you turn east in the forecourt of the Dharma Hall. Because the building faces west, the curved gable and long eaves catch the afternoon sun. Follow the west front south from the porch to see the close rhythm of posts, one at every bay.
The Abbot's Quarters is part of the temple's daily life, and there is no published notice that the interior is regularly open. Contact the temple in advance if you hope to see the reception rooms.
