What Is Kokokuji Temple Great Gate?
Kokokuji Temple Great Gate (興国寺大門, Kōkoku-ji Daimon) is the four-legged gate (Shikyakumon) facing south at the entrance to the approach, the southern end of Kokokuji in Monzen, Yura Town, Wakayama Prefecture; built in 1938, it became a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on August 6, 2025.
The Great Gate was moved to its present site in 1997; according to Wakayama Prefecture, it originally stood about 400 meters to the south. Its opening is 3.9 meters wide, and it is the only gate among the five registered buildings.
A Tall Gate All in Zelkova
Kokokuji Temple Great Gate has a gabled tiled roof (Kirizuma-zukuri). Two round main posts stand at the center, each braced front and back by a supporting post (Hikaebashira), which is what gives a four-legged gate its name. Tie beams at mid-height and at the top lock the frame together.
On top of the posts sit three-part bracket sets that carry the gable-end tie beams (Kōryō) and the purlins at the eaves. The rafters are doubled in two close-set layers. Everything is zelkova, and the posts are set tall, so the gate rises well above head height.
The showpiece is the carving at the ends of the top tie beams (Kibana), which is cut into three-dimensional peony blossoms in openwork.

The Agency for Cultural Affairs registered Kokokuji Temple Great Gate as a model of architectural form, under number 30-0410. The database classes it as an "other structure" rather than a building.
The Agency's description notes that the tall gate, built entirely of zelkova, carries the dignity of an ancient temple. Although it dates from the Showa era, it follows the standard form of a four-legged gate closely and adds lavish detail in the peony carving.
Seeing Kokokuji Temple Great Gate
Every visitor to Kokokuji passes through the Great Gate. Look up at the ends of the top tie beams at the four corners to find the peony carving; stand beneath the gate to see the bracket sets and tie beams overhead.
The main halls lie about 250 meters north of the gate along the approach. The gate is in everyday use and needs no special arrangement to see. From the road to the south you can best judge its height.
