What Is Kokokuji Temple Zazen Hall?
Kokokuji Temple Zazen Hall (興国寺坐禅堂, Kōkoku-ji Zazendō) is the meditation hall standing north of the Dharma Hall at Kokokuji in Monzen, Yura Town, Wakayama Prefecture; built in the late Edo period, it became a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on August 6, 2025. Trainee monks, known in Zen as unsui, have sat in meditation here.
Like the Dharma Hall, the Zazen Hall faces south on the temple's central axis. It covers 78 square meters, was enlarged at the end of the Edo period and was renovated in 1984.
A T-Shaped Plan with Tatami Platforms
Kokokuji Temple Zazen Hall joins two wings. The front hall runs east to west under a hip-and-gable (Irimoya-zukuri) tiled roof, and a rear hall runs north from the middle of its back, so that from above the building forms a T.
Inside, one continuous floor of diagonally laid tiles (Shihanjiki) runs from the front hall into the rear hall, with no partitions. At each end of the front hall are raised tatami platforms called tan, where the monks sit. The middle is left open. At the two ends of the rear hall's north wall stand a Buddhist altar and a mortuary tablet altar.

The Agency for Cultural Affairs registered Kokokuji Temple Zazen Hall as a building that contributes to the historic landscape, under number 30-0407. Of the five buildings registered the same day, it is the only one listed under that criterion; the other four were registered as models of architectural form.
The Agency's description stresses its place on the axis of the precinct and its role at the core of the temple scene. Set between the Dharma Hall and the Founder's Hall, a hall devoted to the daily discipline of meditation is what makes Kokokuji read unmistakably as a Zen monastery.
Seeing Kokokuji Temple Zazen Hall
Kokokuji Temple Zazen Hall is hidden from the approach by the Dharma Hall. Walk north past the side of the Dharma Hall and its hip-and-gable roof comes into view. Step around to the east or west side to see the rear hall projecting behind the front one and the T-shaped plan becomes clear.
The covered stairway to the Founder's Hall rises from the north of the Zazen Hall. This is a working space for practice, and there is no published notice of regular interior opening; ask the temple directly about visits or any chance to join zazen.
