The Seto Family Residence Former Maid's Room and Bathhouse (瀬戸家住宅旧女中部屋及び風呂, Seto-ke Jūtaku Kyū-Jochūbeya oyobi Furo) is a single-storey timber service building on the Seto family estate in Fujii, Fujita-cho, Gobo City, Wakayama Prefecture, combining the servants' quarters and the family bath; it was built in the late Taisho period (1919 to 1926) and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 2 November 2018. It covers 30 square meters.
It stands behind the main house at the east end of the estate's north side. The ridge runs east to west under a tiled gabled Kirizuma-zukuri roof, and the walls are white Shikkui plaster above a skirting of vertical boards. The prefecture believes it went up at about the same time as the main house.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs database reads the name as jochūheya, while Gobo City gives jochūbeya; the difference is only one of pronunciation.
Three Rooms in a Row
Inside the Seto Family Residence Former Maid's Room and Bathhouse, three rooms sit side by side: the bath, the maid's room and a room for storing pickles. According to the prefecture, the bath is at the west end.
The finishes tell the rooms apart. The bath has tiled walls up to waist height and a proper ceiling, which the prefecture describes as refined. The maid's room and the pickle room have no ceiling at all; you look straight up into the roof framing.
The bath holds a goemon-buro, a cast-iron tub heated directly by a fire beneath it. Because the whole tub sits over the flames, bathers step onto a floating wooden board and press it down to keep their feet off the hot metal. Care went into the room the family used; the servant's room and the store got only what they needed. The contrast within a single small building records who used each space and for what.

Servants' rooms and wash areas are usually the first things lost when a large house is rebuilt. Here they survive from the same period as the main house and the reception wing.
