The Seto Family Residence Front Gate and Wall (瀬戸家住宅表門及び塀, Seto-ke Jūtaku Omotemon oyobi Hei) is the gate and boundary wall enclosing the southeast corner of the Seto family estate in Fujii, Fujita-cho, Gobo City, Wakayama Prefecture; both were built in the late Taisho period (1919 to 1926) and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 2 November 2018. The gate is 2.0 meters wide with a short wing wall on its north side, and the wall runs for 20 meters.
The gate stands southeast of the main house and opens east onto a lane. The wall joins it on the south and continues along the edge of the lot. Of the seven registered Seto family properties, this is the only one classed as a structure other than a building.
A Bracket-Armed Gate
The Seto Family Residence Front Gate is an Udekimon, a gate whose eaves rest on arms projecting sideways from its posts. It spans a single bay and has a gabled Kirizuma-zukuri roof laid with pantiles. A small wicket door is set to the right as you face the gate.
Under the eaves the rafters are set in close pairs, a treatment called fukiyose-daruki that makes the eaves look light and finely drawn. In contrast, the transom panel above the doorway is made from kiboku, natural timber chosen for its unusual shape, used boldly. Precise eaves and a free-form transom on the same small gate are what the Agency for Cultural Affairs highlights.
Even the tiles were chosen with care. According to Wakayama Prefecture, the gate uses maru-sangawara, pantiles with a rounded profile.
The Wall and Its Straight-Edged Tiles
The wall of the Seto Family Residence is built in the Shinkabe manner, with its posts left exposed, and finished in Shikkui plaster over a skirting of vertical boards. Its coping is laid with ichimonji-gawara, eaves tiles whose lower edges are cut perfectly straight, so the top of the wall reads as one clean horizontal line.
Twenty meters of white wall under that straight edge give the estate its formal face. The Seto Family Residence Front Gate and Wall was registered under number 30-0244 for its contribution to the historic landscape, and the agency credits it with giving the old family house a dignified front.
