What Is the Seto Family Residence Zashiki Reception Wing?
The Seto Family Residence Zashiki Reception Wing (瀬戸家住宅座敷, Seto-ke Jūtaku Zashiki) is a single-storey timber guest wing standing beside the main house of the Seto family estate in Fujii, Fujita-cho, Gobo City, Wakayama Prefecture; it is dated to the early Showa period (1926 to 1945) and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 2 November 2018. It covers 180 square meters.
A zashiki is the formal tatami room where a Japanese household received guests, and here it grew into a building of its own. The roof is a tiled hip-and-gable Irimoya-zukuri form, and the wing measures 9 bays east to west by 5.5 bays north to south. At the east end of the south front is a separate entrance porch under its own hip-and-gable roof. A kitchen occupies the northeast corner and a tea room projects at the southwest. With its own door and its own kitchen, the Seto Family Residence Zashiki Reception Wing could host guests without drawing on the main house at all.
The Kadono architectural office of Osaka designed it, as it did the main house, and its drawings survive too. According to the prefecture, it is said to have been built as quarters for a retired head of the family, yet it is fitted out as a full suite for entertaining.
Dating the Wing and Its Tea Room
Sources disagree on when the Seto Family Residence Zashiki Reception Wing was built. The Agency for Cultural Affairs database gives the early Showa period and notes an extension around 1960. Wakayama Prefecture and Gobo City say the construction date is unknown and relate that the wing followed the main house. We give both accounts here.
All sources agree that the tea room at the southwest corner came later. The prefecture and city date that addition to 1959 and 1960.
Like the main house, the wing was registered as a model of design, under number 30-0239. The agency describes it as a guest wing that pairs neat, disciplined workmanship in fine timber with decorative flair.
Cypress Rooms and a Fan-Pattern Transom
The heart of the interior is a pair of connected rooms: a main room of 12.5 tatami mats and a 10-mat anteroom. The larger room has a Tokonoma alcove, staggered display shelves beside it and a built-in writing desk, the Tsukeshoin, making it a formal shoin-style reception room.
Where the main house is framed in hemlock, the Seto Family Residence Zashiki Reception Wing is built of Hinoki cypress. Close-grained cypress was chosen for the posts and for the Nageshi, the horizontal tie beams that run around the walls. Using a different timber for the guest wing than for the family house marks the difference between living and receiving in the materials themselves.
Between the two rooms runs a Ranma, an openwork transom panel, carved with overlapping folding fans in Sukashibori pierced work. In rooms otherwise built of straight lines, the curves of the fans and the light that falls through them draw the eye. Both the prefecture and the city single out this transom as the defining detail of the wing.
Visiting the Seto Family Residence Zashiki Reception Wing
The Seto Family Residence Zashiki Reception Wing is privately owned and normally closed to the public. During a private event on 27 and 28 April 2024, the tea room was opened along with the main house. We found no regular opening schedule.
The wing stands inside the grounds, so it is hard to see from outside. Please stay on the public road and do not enter the property.
