What Is the Seto Family Residence Main House?
The Seto Family Residence Main House (瀬戸家住宅主屋, Seto-ke Jūtaku Shuoku) is the principal dwelling of an old family estate in Fujii, Fujita-cho, Gobo City, Wakayama Prefecture, a two-storey timber house built in the late Taisho period (1919 to 1926) and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 2 November 2018. With a footprint of 201 square meters, it is the largest of the seven registered buildings on the estate.
The house stands toward the east of the lot and faces south. Its roof is a hip-and-gable Irimoya-zukuri form laid with pantiles, and the main block measures 9 bays east to west by 8.5 bays north to south. A bedroom wing projects to the west as a Tsunoya, and living rooms push out at the back as well.
The client was Seto Kenzō, the twelfth head of the family, who founded a paper company in 1920. The Kadono architectural office in Osaka drew up the design, and part of the drawings made for the Seto Family Residence Main House still survives.
Why It Was Registered
The Seto Family Residence Main House was registered under number 30-0238 as a model of design. The Agency for Cultural Affairs singles out the careful workmanship and fine timber, and calls it a good example of a modern Japanese-style house.
Wakayama Prefecture adds that the frame and joinery are built of hemlock (tsuga) throughout, chosen for its straight, even grain. Both the prefecture and Gobo City also point to something the exterior hides: a single Western-style room on the upper floor, set inside an otherwise traditional tiled house.
The Through Passage and the Western Room
On the ground floor, an earth-floored Doma runs along the east side, and seven rooms in three rows fill the west. The doma is a through passage, running from the entrance on the east to the back of the house, and it rises open to the roof timbers. At its far end is the daidokoro, the family kitchen, where the cooking range and sink remain in place. Gobo City names this double-height passage and the little-altered kitchen as the highlights of the Seto Family Residence Main House.
The most formal room on the ground floor is an eight-mat zashiki with a Tokonoma alcove, finished as a shoin-style reception room. Family rooms and the room for guests share the same three-row plan on the west side.
A staircase rising from the doma leads upstairs, where there are further tatami rooms and, in the southwest corner, the Western room. Its floor is parquet, and its south window looks out over the Hidaka River. The prefecture suggests it was probably used to entertain visitors.
From the street you would never guess the room was there. Keeping the traditional exterior intact while fitting out the one corner with the best view in Western style says a good deal about how a provincial industrialist of the 1920s chose to live.
Visiting the Seto Family Residence Main House
The Seto Family Residence Main House is privately owned and its interior is normally closed. On 27 and 28 April 2024 it served as the venue for a private craft event, and visitors were able to go inside; the organizer encouraged guests to look at the open passage, the kitchen and the original cooking range. Openings like this are irregular, and we found no announcement of another.
Because the grounds are closed, the house cannot be seen as a whole from outside. Please stay on the public road and do not enter the property.
