What Is the Sogawa Family Residence Front Gate?
The Sogawa Family Residence Front Gate (寒川家住宅表門, Sōgawa-ke Jūtaku Omotemon) is a timber Munamon, a ridge-roofed gate, standing at the center of the south front of the Sogawa family homestead in Hidakagawa Town, Wakayama Prefecture; built in 1937, it was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on December 24, 2013.
It is 3 bays wide, 4.0 metres in all, under a Kirizuma-zukuri gabled roof covered in cedar bark. It went up in the same year as the walls that run off to either side, and gate and walls were designed as a single frontage.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs calls the Sogawa Family Residence Front Gate a large gate of real presence. Of all seven registered structures, it is the one you see best from the lane.
Why the Front Gate Was Registered
It qualifies under the criterion of contributing to the historic landscape of the country. The Agency notes that it lends the homestead's frontage a sense of standing.
Setting a large new gate and walls in front of a late-Edo thatched farmhouse in 1937 gave the whole place a more formal face. The Wakayama Prefectural Board of Education lists the gate among the key elements of the homestead.
Three Bays and No Doors
Of the 3 bays, the central one is widest and forms the entrance. Behind it stand two braces, back posts that steady the gate from the rear.
The east bay holds a Kugurido, a small pedestrian doorway, and the west bay is closed with vertical boards. Neither the central opening nor the east one has a door hung in it; the gate is always open. It was built less to shut people out than to announce the house.
Cedar bark, laid in overlapping layers, gives the roof a softer, more textured look than tile. The walls on either side are roofed the same way, so gate and walls read as one continuous roofline.
Visiting the Front Gate
The Sogawa Family Residence Front Gate faces the lane on the south side and can be seen head-on from there. Beyond it is a private home: the gate may look open, but please do not walk through.
