What Is the Sogawa Family Residence Stone Wall?
The Sogawa Family Residence Stone Wall (寒川家住宅石垣, Sōgawa-ke Jūtaku Ishigaki) is a low cut-stone wall marking the southwest edge of the Sogawa family homestead in Hidakagawa Town, Wakayama Prefecture; built between 1926 and 1945, it was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on December 24, 2013.
It runs between the end of the wall that extends west from the front gate and the small gate on the west side of the plot, bending gently as it goes, for a length of 20 metres.
It is registered as a single structure, and the Sogawa Family Residence Stone Wall is the only one of the homestead's seven registered structures built of stone.
Why the Stone Wall Was Registered
It qualifies under the criterion of contributing to the historic landscape of the country. The Agency for Cultural Affairs highlights the way the stones are set to echo the family crest, adding variety to the frontage.
In a homestead made of timber, earth and plaster, the stone wall gives the southwest corner a different texture. When the registration was announced, the Hidaka Shimpo described it as a wall laid out in the shape of the family's plum crest.
Plum Blossoms in Stone
The stones are cut blocks laid in 4 courses to about waist height, in the Nunozumi manner with continuous horizontal joints, so the wall reads as a series of clean lines. Plants grow along the top.
At several points the stones are arranged to form umebachi, a stylized plum blossom used as a family crest. Spotting these motifs as you walk the length of the wall is the pleasure of looking at it.
Instead of running straight, the wall follows the ground in a gentle curve, softening the southwest corner of the homestead.
Visiting the Stone Wall
The Sogawa Family Residence Stone Wall is on the southwest edge of the plot and can be seen from outside the grounds. The top and the land behind are part of a private home, so please do not climb it or touch the plants.
The plum motifs are easiest to make out from a few steps back, facing the wall. Keep photographs to outside the grounds. Directions are on the Sogawa Family Residence page.
