What Is the Sogawa Family Residence Annex?
The Sogawa Family Residence Annex (寒川家住宅離れ, Sōgawa-ke Jūtaku Hanare) is a single-storey reception wing on the west side of the Sogawa family homestead in Hidakagawa Town, Wakayama Prefecture; built between 1912 and 1918, it was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on December 24, 2013.
A covered corridor links it to the main house. The annex is a timber building under an Irimoya-zukuri hip-and-gable roof of Sangawara-buki tiles, with a skirt roof, or Geya, on all four sides. The building area is 108 square metres, and it was remodelled at some point between 1926 and 1945.
Built around a formal reception room with an alcove and a writing bay, it has a different character from the thatched main house where daily life went on. The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes it simply as a tranquil detached wing.
Why the Annex Was Registered
It qualifies under the criterion of contributing to the historic landscape of the country. The Agency singles out the refinement of its reception room and the calm of its exterior.
The Sogawa Family Residence Annex also shows how the homestead grew. A Taisho-era guest wing added to a late-Edo farmhouse reflects a family whose way of living changed over generations while the old house stayed in use.
An Alcove, Staggered Shelves and a Writing Bay
The upper walls are finished in white Shikkui lime plaster and pierced with latticed windows, a lighter look than the heavy thatch of the main house next door.
Inside, three rooms run in a line from east to west. The principal room, at the western end, is eight tatami mats in size and holds a Tokonoma alcove, staggered display shelves known as chigaidana, and an elegantly detailed shoin writing bay. These are the features the Agency's description dwells on.
Even the bathroom and toilet at the back were given decorative ceilings, a measure of how much care went into the whole wing.
Visiting the Annex
The Sogawa Family Residence Annex is part of a private home and is closed to visitors, so none of the interior can be seen.
It stands toward the west of the plot, behind and to the left of the main house as seen from the front gate, so the view from the lane is limited.
