What Is the Sogawa Family Residence Wall?
The Sogawa Family Residence Wall (寒川家住宅塀, Sōgawa-ke Jūtaku Hei) is the timber-framed wall that runs east and west from the front gate of the Sogawa family homestead in Hidakagawa Town, Wakayama Prefecture; built in 1937, it was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on December 24, 2013.
From either side of the gate it runs east and west, turning corners as it goes. The eastern run is 9.5 metres long and the western run 13 metres, 22 metres in all. Like the gate, it is roofed in cedar bark.
Gate and Sogawa Family Residence Wall went up together, and together they form the public face of the homestead.
Why the Wall Was Registered
It qualifies under the criterion of contributing to the historic landscape of the country. The Agency for Cultural Affairs notes that, with the gate, it makes a fine frontage.
A gate alone does not make a front. By running off to either side, the wall closes the south edge of the plot into one continuous face and gives the homestead a clear outline when seen from outside.
Black Plaster with a White Edge
A drip ledge divides the wall into two finishes: vertical boarding below and black Shikkui lime plaster above.
Around the black plaster runs a border of white plaster that frames each panel in a crisp line. The Agency calls it an accent, and it is what keeps a long wall from looking monotonous.
The cedar-bark roof continues the gate's roofline, turning wherever the wall turns.
Visiting the Wall
The Sogawa Family Residence Wall lines the south side of the plot and is visible from the lane there. Standing before the front gate, you will see the black walls stretching away to either side.
