The Golden Hall at the Foot of Mount Haguro

The Haguro-san Shozenin Koganedo (羽黒山正善院黄金堂), or Golden Hall, is the main hall of Shozenin in Toge, the temple town at the foot of Mount Haguro in Hagurocho, Tsuruoka City, Yamagata Prefecture, a pyramidal-roofed hall rebuilt in the Bunroku era by the lord of Sakata Castle, Amakasu Bingo-no-kami, and was designated an Important Cultural Property on April 23, 1908 (Agency for Cultural Affairs, Yamagata Prefecture).

The Agency for Cultural Affairs records it as five bays by four, single-storey, with a pyramidal roof in copper shaped like thatch and a one-bay canopy, dated to 1596; owned by Haguro-san Shozenin. It is also a component of the Japan Heritage story of the Dewa Sanzan journey of rebirth (Japan Heritage portal).

From Kokondo to Koganedo

According to Yamagata Prefecture, its founding date is unknown, but it is said to have been donated by Minamoto no Yoritomo in 1193 and built under his general Doi Sanehira; the present hall is the rebuilding of 1594 by Amakasu Bingo-no-kami.

According to Shozenin, it was called the Kokondo (small golden hall) in contrast to the Daikondo on the summit (now the Sanjin Gosaiden), and from the Bunroku era came to be read Koganedo. Its principal images are thirty-three statues of Sho Kannon, and it is the oldest surviving building on Mount Haguro. A widened road now divides it from Shozenin, but they once shared a vast precinct.

Why It Is an Important Cultural Property

The Haguro-san Shozenin Koganedo was designated an Important Cultural Property in 1908. Yamagata Prefecture notes that its bracketing and the curves of its eaves are thought to follow the original Kamakura style at the Bunroku rebuilding, while details such as bracket ends and struts show Momoyama character and local flavour.

What to Look For

The Haguro-san Shozenin Koganedo is five bays across and four deep with verandas all round. The outer one-bay ambulatory forms the worship space, separated from the sanctuary by a sill and heavy lattice doors; its ceiling is left open to the roof timbers, tied to the sanctuary by connecting beams (Yamagata Prefecture).

Inside, three large seated figures are surrounded by thirty life-size standing figures, all thirty-three Kannon worshipped as principal images. A jewel finial crowns the roof (Shozenin).

Visiting the Koganedo

According to Shozenin, the Haguro-san Shozenin Koganedo can be entered except in snow, from 9:00 to 16:30, for 300 yen. Because of the risk of avalanches and falling snow it is closed from mid-November to mid-April. Staff are not usually present except at openings of the hidden images, so contact the temple in advance and call at Shozenin in front of the hall.

The address is 232 Toge, Hagurocho, Tsuruoka City. Telephone 0235-62-2380 (Shozenin).
