What the Nakano Family Residence Main House Is
The Nakano Family Residence Main House (中野家住宅主屋, Nakano-ke Jūtaku Shuoku) is a late Edo-period farmhouse in Utsui-kami, Shimonoseki City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on November 29, 2006.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs dates it to the late Edo period, a window running from 1830 to 1867, and records a single-storey timber house with a Kayabuki thatched roof, now under a temporary sheet-metal covering, and a building area of 170 square metres. The farmyard well is included in the registration.
The house is the centrepiece of a homestead at the eastern foot of the mountains that ring the Utsui basin. It stands slightly west of the middle of the plot and faces east, with the barn to the north, a storehouse to the southeast, and stone and earthen walls across the front.
Why It Was Registered
The Nakano Family Residence Main House was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency singles out how little it has been altered, calling it a building that keeps the character of a farmhouse in a mountain village.
The plan is a textbook one for western Japan. An earth-floored Doma work area runs along the north side, and the raised floor holds six rooms in a neat grid, a layout known as seikei rokuma-dori. A veranda runs along the east side, and the eight-mat Zashiki reception room in the southeast corner has a Tokonoma alcove and a Buddhist altar. Putting the guest room in the sunniest corner and the work space on the cool north side was standard practice, and here it survives largely untouched.
The sheet metal over the roof is a common stopgap on thatched houses where rethatching has become difficult; it keeps the thatch dry while preserving the roof's shape and pitch.
What to Look For
The silhouette is the thing to study: a tall Yosemune-zukuri hipped roof, with a low tiled pent roof wrapped around all four sides beneath it. Even under metal, the thickness and steep pitch of the old thatch are easy to read.
Looking at the east front, you can see an earthen wall running out from the middle of the house, splitting the forecourt by the entrance from the garden to the south. The reception room sits behind that wall, on the garden side.
Visiting
The Nakano Family Residence Main House is a private home and the interior is not open. As of September 2026 we found no announcement of regular or special openings. Please stay on the public road and do not enter the lane or yard.
