What the Nakano Family Residence Stone Wall Is
The Nakano Family Residence Stone Wall (中野家住宅石垣, Nakano-ke Jūtaku Ishigaki) is a late Edo-period stone retaining wall in Utsui-kami, Shimonoseki City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on November 29, 2006.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs dates it to the late Edo period, 1830 to 1867, and records it as a stone structure with a total length of 58 metres, registered as one site rather than as a building.
The Ishigaki wall forms the eastern edge of the homestead and lines both sides of the entrance lane near its northern end: 18 metres on the north and 40 metres on the south, standing about 3 metres high.
Why It Was Registered
The Nakano Family Residence Stone Wall was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape, and the Agency credits it with giving the homestead its dignified outward appearance. A mountain farm fronted by stonework nearly 3 metres high says a good deal about the standing of the family.
The stones are laid in Uchikomi-hagi fashion as Ranzumi random coursing: stones roughly dressed at the faces and corners, fitted in varied sizes without continuous horizontal joints, a technique also used on castle walls.
On the northern part of the east side, near its middle, the joints break off. The Agency reads this as evidence of two phases of construction, so the wall was not built in one campaign.
What to Look For
The corners are the thing to look at. Where the wall turns outward, the builders shaped the angle as a smooth curve rather than a sharp arris, and the Agency singles this careful finish out.
Then notice how the wall stages the approach: it rises on both sides of the lane up to the forecourt, so arriving at the house means passing between walls of stone. Compare it too with the more precisely dressed Kirikomi-hagi footing of the earthen wall nearby.
Visiting
The Nakano Family Residence Stone Wall belongs to a private homestead that is not open to the public; as of September 2026 no openings had been announced. The entrance lane is private, so do not walk up it. View the wall from the public road and be considerate of residents when taking photographs. Directions are on the Nakano Family Residence (Utsui, Shimonoseki) page.
