The Toishi Hachiman Shrine Gate and Side Wall (遠石八幡宮神門及び袖塀, Toishi Hachimangū Shinmon oyobi Sodebei) is the front gate facing the worship hall at Toishi Hachimangū in Shunan City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, together with the walls flanking it, built in 1940 and entered on the national register as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on December 24, 2013. The gate is timber, copper roofed, with a frontage of 4.2 meters. The flanking walls are also timber and copper roofed, running 12 meters in total and pierced by a small doorway.
The gate is a shikyakumon, a form named for the four subsidiary posts set fore and aft of the two main posts. At Toishi the main posts are round and the subsidiary posts square, so the section of the timber itself marks which member does what.
The roof was originally cypress bark. Yamaguchi Prefecture's cultural properties database records the change, and the copper seen today came later. The gate went up as part of the rebuilding that followed the fire of 1936, with Sunami Takashi of the Home Ministry as consultant and Inagaki Hideo as architect.

Gate and walls were registered as one item because they form a single composition. Each wall runs three bays, with a side doorway at the centre and latticed windows in the bays on either side. Take the gate away from its walls and the composition stops working.
Visitors climbing the approach meet this structure first. It faces the worship hall squarely, so that anyone standing just inside it looks straight down the middle of the two-storey worship hall beyond. Details Worth Looking For
Start above the main posts. Where they rise past the tie beam, the carpenters worked them together with a Kōryō beam so that the joint reads as a Taiheizuka strut, then added carved scrollwork on either side. The treatment belongs more to the gable of a shrine hall than to a gate, and it is what gives this entrance its character.
Over the subsidiary posts the detailing drops away to a plain block and arm, and the eaves use a single tier of rafters. Effort was spent at the centre and withheld at the edges.
The doors are double-leaf sankarado, panelled between horizontal and vertical stiles. The type spread through Japan with Zen temple architecture and turns up on shrine gates across the country, including this one.
The small doorway cut into the flanking wall is not much used by ordinary worshippers. Its presence tells you the walls are meant to be passable rather than sealed. Above the boarded lower section, the latticed openings give a broken view of what lies inside the Toishi Hachiman Shrine Gate and Side Wall.
