What the Toishi Hachiman Shrine Sacred Food Preparation Hall Is
The Toishi Hachiman Shrine Sacred Food Preparation Hall (遠石八幡宮神饌所, Toishi Hachimangū Shinsensho) is the building of 1940 behind and to the left of the worship hall at Toishi Hachimangū in Shunan City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, where food offerings are made ready. It joined the national register as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on December 24, 2013. Single storey and timber framed, with a Kirizuma-zukuri gable roofed in sheet copper, it covers 17 square meters.
Shinsen are the foods and drinks set before the deity: rice, sake, rice cakes, fish, seaweed, vegetables, fruit, salt and water. Each is arranged according to fixed practice and carried to the halls in a set order. The Toishi Hachiman Shrine Sacred Food Preparation Hall is where that work is done, and it has been in use at every monthly and seasonal rite since it was built.
The earlier shrine buildings burned in 1936. Rebuilding proceeded with Sunami Takashi of the Home Ministry advising and Inagaki Hideo designing, and two small buildings were set behind the worship hall, one to each side. This one occupies the left.
Half of a Symmetry
Registration came under the criterion for buildings that serve as a model of design, with the number 35-0082. The Agency for Cultural Affairs makes a point of the symmetrical scene that this building forms together with the ritual vessel storehouse opposite.
Stand in front of the worship hall and look past it. Two buildings face each other behind it, matched in size, roof and wall treatment. The one on the right stores ritual implements; the one on the left is the Toishi Hachiman Shrine Sacred Food Preparation Hall. Two entirely different functions were given one shared appearance.
There is a reason for that. Had the pair differed, the eye would settle on whichever was more interesting. Making them identical balances the two sides and lets the run of worship hall, offering hall and sanctuary read as the centre of the precinct. The Toishi Hachiman Shrine Sacred Food Preparation Hall does its architectural work by not asking for attention.
Windows That Face Inward
The fittings show how the building is used. The side facing outward is a boarded wall shaped like a lattice window, with no opening in it. The side facing into the precinct carries glazed lattice windows that slide. Preparing food offerings needs light on the working surface, so daylight is drawn from the courtyard while the outer face is kept in step with the look of the enclosure.
The frame uses square posts tied by Nageshi rails at waist and lintel height. Bracketing stops at a boat-shaped arm and the eaves carry a single tier of closely spaced rafters. In the gable a pair of raking struts meets beneath the ridge beam. Ornament has been cut back hard, though the way the eaves are finished shows the same hands that worked on the halls.
Boarding runs horizontally above the waist rail and vertically below it. The latticed enclosure wall meets the gable end of the Toishi Hachiman Shrine Sacred Food Preparation Hall and continues from there around the back of the sanctuary. Looking at that junction explains how the whole enclosure holds together.
Visiting
The precincts of Toishi Hachimangū are open and free of charge. The Toishi Hachiman Shrine Sacred Food Preparation Hall is a working ritual facility and its interior is closed to the public, though the exterior can be seen from the left of the worship hall. Requests for prayer rituals are taken from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Photography for personal use is permitted in the grounds. Photography, filming or drawing for commercial purposes requires permission from the shrine in advance.
Bōchō Kōtsū buses leave from in front of JR Tokuyama Station for the Toishi Hachimangū-mae stop. By car it is about 15 minutes from the Tokuyama-higashi interchange on the Sanyō Expressway, and parking is free. Monthly rites are held on the 1st and the 15th, when food offerings are presented in the halls.
