Two openings interrupt the run. Near the worship hall wings there is a sliding doorway; behind the sanctuary, a pair of hinged doors. Both serve ritual movement rather than ordinary visiting, and neither is normally open.

Behind the lattice, the frame is straightforward. Square posts are tied by rails at waist and lintel height, and projecting arms carry the purlin that supports a single tier of rafters. The base is boarded vertically. Closed below, open above: that division holds for the full 58 meters.
The sanctuary sits inside the enclosure, screened from the front by the worship hall and offering hall. Walking around to the outside of the wall and looking through the lattice gives a sight of the sanctuary's balustraded veranda and part of its gable ornament. This is as close as a visitor gets to the sanctuary itself.
The roof is sheet copper, the same green as the roofs it encircles, so the outline of the precinct holds one colour throughout.
Visiting
The precincts of Toishi Hachimangū are open with no admission charge. The outside of the Toishi Hachiman Shrine Lattice Wall can be walked freely; the enclosed area inside it cannot be entered. Requests for prayer rituals are taken from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Photography for personal use is allowed in the grounds. Photography, filming or drawing for commercial purposes requires the shrine's permission in advance.
Buses operated by Bōchō Kōtsū leave from in front of JR Tokuyama Station for the Toishi Hachimangū-mae stop. By car, allow about 15 minutes from the Tokuyama-higashi interchange on the Sanyō Expressway; parking is free. Circling the precinct along the wall is the quickest way to understand how the buildings are arranged.
