The posts are set out like those of a four-legged gate. Stone footings flank the stone basin on either side, and main and subsidiary posts rise from them. All the posts are square in section. The main pair does not stop at eaves height; it continues to the ridge, where a block and arm receive the ridge beam.
Look at how the subsidiary posts are handled at the top. Paired beams, one riding over the other, tie them together and throw a purlin outward to carry the Kirizuma-zukuri roof. A gate's structural logic has been rebuilt as a shelter for water.
The basin at the centre is granite. Yamaguchi Prefecture's record notes that the names of the donors and the year of the donation are cut into it, and that the spout takes the form of a dragon with water falling from its mouth. It is worth reading the stone before rinsing your hands.
