A Standard Station, Enlarged Throughout
The Kominato Railway Kazusa Ushiku Station Building (小湊鉄道上総牛久駅本屋) is a single-storey timber station built around 1925 in the Ushiku district of Ichihara City, Chiba Prefecture; extended in 1932 and 1985, it was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on May 2, 2017.
The station sits in the middle of Ushiku, about 1 kilometer east of the Second Yorogawa Bridge. The Kominato Railway Kazusa Ushiku Station Building began as the line's standard opening-era design under a pantiled roof.
Additions Unified in Clapboard
The Agency for Cultural Affairs records it as single-storey timber with a tiled roof and a building area of 71 square meters, larger than most stations on the line.
As passenger numbers grew, both the office and the waiting room were enlarged. The agency notes how the builders clad old and new alike in horizontal boards so the whole reads as one; from outside, the joins are not easy to find.
Seeing It
The Kominato Railway Kazusa Ushiku Station Building is in daily use, and the waiting room is open to passengers. Stand in the forecourt to take in the long, evenly boarded frontage.
After the September 2026 typhoon, Kazusa Ushiku became the end of the section still served by trains. The company's service update of September 25 says the Satoyama Torocco tourist train is expected to run between Goi and Kazusa Ushiku from October. As of September 25, 2026, trains between Goi and Kazusa Ushiku were running normally.
