A Manager's House from Japan's Chemical Industry Boom
In 1935, Sumitomo Chemical Industries built a single-story wooden residence for one of its senior managers on the western edge of the Yamada company housing district in Niihama, Ehime Prefecture. The house survived when nearly everything around it was demolished. Today it stands as one of only six buildings left from a neighborhood that once held as many as 290 company homes, and since August 17, 2020 it has been protected as a nationally Registered Tangible Cultural Property.
The company behind it has an unusual origin. Sumitomo Chemical began as a fertilizer works founded to absorb the sulfurous smoke produced by copper smelting at the Besshi mine, turning a pollution problem into an industry. By the 1930s the firm had grown into a major chemical manufacturer, and its executives lived here in Hoshigoe, within walking distance of the Sumitomo plants that dominated the Niihama waterfront.
The building covers 275 square meters and sits low under a tiled roof, its exterior clad in horizontal clapboard siding. After decades of continuous use, it was renovated in 2018 and is now owned by Niihama City.
A Floor Plan That Separates Work from Home
What earned this house its national registration is the clarity of its plan. The entrance occupies the northeast corner. Beside it, in the southeast corner, sits a Western-style reception room where the resident received company visitors. West of these, the south side holds a formal Japanese guest room, while the north side contains the living room, kitchen, and other family spaces.
Running through the middle is a tatami-floored corridor. This single element divides the house into two worlds: the eastern zone for official business and the western zone for private life. A manager could host colleagues in the reception room without ever exposing his family's quarters. The Agency for Cultural Affairs registered the building under the criterion of serving as a model of architectural form, and this disciplined zoning is a large part of why.
The mixture of one Western room within an otherwise Japanese house was typical of interwar company housing for executives, but few examples survive with their plan this legible.
Visiting the House Today
Unlike many registered properties that remain private homes, this one is open to the public. Niihama City operates it as part of the Sumitomo Yamada Company Housing preservation project. Interiors can be viewed on Sundays from 10:00 a.m. to noon, every week from April through November and on the second and fourth Sundays from December through March. Admission is free and a free parking lot serves the site.
Inside, the renovated rooms feel surprisingly livable. The house served as the residence of successive factory managers after the war, with the last occupant leaving in 2004, so later fittings sit alongside the original framework. Look for the diamond-shaped window beside the entrance and the transition point where the tatami corridor changes the character of the house.
The former residence of the Besshi Mining Office director, another registered property with a reception annex and tea room, stands a short walk away, and the Higurashi Villa Memorial Museum on the nearby hill overlooks the whole district. Groups of five or more should reserve two weeks ahead through the city's Besshi Copper Mine Cultural Heritage Division.
