The Largest Footprint Among the Six Survivors

At 295 square meters of building area, the Former Sumitomo Joint Electric Power Executive Company House has the largest footprint of any single building among the six registered houses remaining in the Yamada company housing district of Niihama, Ehime Prefecture. Even the main house of the mining office director's residence nearby covers less ground.

The house was completed in 1935 for a senior manager of Sumitomo Joint Electric Power, the utility founded to supply electricity to the Sumitomo mines, smelters, and factories that made Niihama one of western Japan's great company towns. It stands in the western part of the district, where the group's affiliated companies built graded housing for their executives from 1929 onward, eventually reaching as many as 290 houses. On August 17, 2020, the six survivors were registered together as national Tangible Cultural Properties.

The building is a single-story wooden structure roofed with interlocking pantiles.

Vertical Boards, Plastered Walls, Ten Tatami Mats

The exterior sets this house apart from its neighbors. Where the Sumitomo Chemical executive house of the same year wears horizontal clapboard, this one is clad in vertical board siding, with the narrow wall band above finished in white plaster. The two houses, built in the same year for men of similar rank in different Sumitomo companies, make an instructive pair.

Inside, the entrance at the northeast corner opens to a hall. To the south lies a Western-style reception room for company visitors. West of it are two formal Japanese guest rooms of ten and six tatami mats, a generous provision that reflects the scale of entertaining expected of an executive household. The eastern half of the plan serves guests, the western half the family's private life, the same disciplined zoning found throughout the district's senior housing.

The Agency for Cultural Affairs registered the building under the criterion of serving as a model of architectural form.

Seen from the Street, with Open Houses Nearby

The interior of this house is not currently open. Visitors can view the building from the outside only, and conservation work may occasionally limit even that, so a check with Niihama City's Besshi Copper Mine Cultural Heritage Division before traveling is worthwhile. The vertical siding and plastered upper walls read clearly from the street.

Four other registered buildings within a few minutes' walk do open their interiors: the mining office director's residence with its main house, reception annex, and tea room, the Sumitomo Chemical executive house, and the two 1930 Western-style houses for foreign engineers. They can be entered on Sundays from 10:00 a.m. to noon, weekly from April through November and on the second and fourth Sundays from December through March, free of charge, with free parking on site. Groups of five or more need a reservation two weeks in advance.

The Higurashi Villa Memorial Museum on the hill above, a Sumitomo guesthouse relocated from Shisakajima Island, offers a view over the district and a sense of how much of the company town has vanished around these six houses.
