A Tea Room at the Top of a Company Town
The residence built in 1937 for the director of Sumitomo's Besshi Mining Office in Niihama, Ehime Prefecture, came equipped for every register of hospitality: tatami rooms in the main house, a Western drawing room in the reception annex, and, attached at the southeast corner, a purpose-built tea room. This tea room building, covering 61 square meters, was registered as a national Tangible Cultural Property on August 17, 2020, alongside the main house, the annex, and three other houses of the Yamada company housing district.
That a corporate residence included dedicated space for the tea ceremony reflects the culture of the Sumitomo enterprise, whose leadership cultivated tea as part of the etiquette of business and rank. The Besshi copper mine, worked from 1691 to 1973, was the group's founding asset, and its on-site director occupied the largest residence in the district, a compound totaling 349.13 square meters of floor area.
Like the rest of the compound, the tea room was renovated in 2018 and is now owned by Niihama City.
A Tokonoma That Breaks the Rules
The building consists of two parts, both under gabled pantile roofs: a northern section holding the preparation area and anteroom, and the tea room proper at the southern end, wrapped on three sides by low pent roofs. The tea room is an eight-mat chamber, more spacious than the intimate few-mat huts of the rustic wabi tradition, with verandas running along its south and west sides.
The most striking feature waits on the east wall. The tokonoma alcove there is composed with deliberate freedom: its floor post rises from the top of a low cabinet, a jibukuro, one and a half ken wide, roughly 2.7 meters, and above the cabinet a translucent shoji screen opens to admit light. Where convention treats the tokonoma as a fixed, solemn composition, this one plays with levels, storage, and daylight. The building is registered under the criterion of serving as a model of architectural form.
Seeing the Tea Room on a Public Open Day
The director's residence, tea room included, opens to visitors on Sundays from 10:00 a.m. to noon, every week from April through November and on the second and fourth Sundays from December through March. Admission is free and free parking is available. Groups of five or more must reserve two weeks ahead through Niihama City's Besshi Copper Mine Cultural Heritage Division, and opening can change with conservation work.
Take the sequence as a guest of the 1930s would have: the main house's zigzag corridor, perhaps the Western reception annex, then this quieter room at the garden edge. Sit at the level of the mats, if viewing conditions allow, and study how the light from the shoji above the cabinet falls across the alcove. The eight-mat scale means the room reads as gracious rather than austere, suited to a director entertaining guests who might not be tea adepts.
The same open days admit visitors to the Sumitomo Chemical executive house and the two foreign engineers' houses nearby, and the Higurashi Villa Memorial Museum on the hill completes a half-day circuit of Sumitomo's Niihama.
