The Grandest Residence in a Vanished Company Town
Of the roughly 290 houses that once filled the Yamada company housing district in Niihama, Ehime Prefecture, six remain. The most imposing is the residence built in 1937 for the director of the Besshi Mining Office, the man who ran Sumitomo's copper mine on site. Its main house, together with a reception annex and a tea room, forms a compound that is the largest in the district by both site and total floor area, the three buildings together covering 349.13 square meters. All three were registered as national Tangible Cultural Properties on August 17, 2020.
The Besshi mine, worked from 1691 to 1973, generated the wealth on which the modern Sumitomo group was built, and Niihama grew up around its smelters, its railway, and its ore-dressing plant at Hoshigoe. The housing district rose on the flat ground below the plant from 1929 onward, graded street by street according to company rank. The director's residence occupied the top of that hierarchy.
The main house covers 214 square meters, was renovated in 2018, and now belongs to Niihama City.
Restraint as a Form of Luxury
The house is a long, low, single-story building under a hip-and-gable roof of interlocking pantiles, set facing north in the center of its plot. At the east end of the ridge, small chidori-hafu gables, triangular dormer-like ornaments, break both the north and south roof slopes, and a pent roof extends along the south side. The composition is stately without ever tipping into display.
Inside, a corridor runs through the house in a staggered, zigzag line, a device known as gankou that lends depth and variety to the sequence of rooms. Along the south side, facing the garden light, lie the formal tatami rooms fitted with tokonoma alcoves. The north side holds the entrance and the service quarters where household staff worked. The official registration text characterizes the design as refined and high in quality while deliberately holding ornament back.
That restraint is the point. Sumitomo's house style favored quiet substance over show, and the director's residence renders the corporate ethos in timber, plaster, and tile. The building is registered under the criterion of serving as a model of architectural form.
Inside the House on a Sunday Morning
Niihama City opens the director's residence to visitors on Sundays from 10:00 a.m. to noon, every week from April through November and on the second and fourth Sundays from December through March. Admission is free, a free parking lot serves the site, and groups of five or more should reserve two weeks in advance through the Besshi Copper Mine Cultural Heritage Division. Opening may change with conservation work, so a check before traveling is sensible.
Walk the zigzag corridor slowly and watch how each turn reframes the garden through the southern rooms. Then cross the covered corridor to the Western-style reception annex, and continue to the tea room attached at the southeast, where an eight-mat chamber shows a playfully unconventional tokonoma. Few places let you move through the Japanese, Western, and tea-ceremony faces of prewar corporate hospitality in a single visit.
The 1935 Sumitomo Chemical executive house and two 1930 houses for foreign engineers open on the same schedule nearby, and the Higurashi Villa Memorial Museum on the hill above surveys the whole district.
