The Youngest House in the Yamada District
Most of the surviving Sumitomo company houses in Niihama's Hoshigoe district date from the 1930s. This one does not. The Former Sumitomo Joint Electric Power Auditor's Company House was completed in 1959, a quarter century after its neighbors, making it the youngest of the six buildings registered as national Tangible Cultural Properties here on August 17, 2020.
Sumitomo Joint Electric Power, known in Japanese as Sumitomo Kyodo Denryoku, was founded to supply electricity to the Sumitomo enterprises clustered around the Besshi copper mine and the industrial waterfront of Niihama, Ehime Prefecture. The company reserved this residence for its auditor, a corporate officer charged with overseeing the firm's accounts and management.
The house is a single-story wooden building under a roof of interlocking pantiles, with a building area of 173 square meters. Its exterior walls carry a sprayed coating rather than the clapboard or vertical board siding seen on the prewar houses nearby, a finish that quietly marks its postwar date.
Guests to the East, Family to the West
The plan follows a logic shared across the district's executive housing: keep official visitors and family life apart. The main entrance sits at the center of the east end. To its south lies the reception room for company callers, and to the west a formal Japanese guest room fitted with a tokonoma alcove and staggered shelves.
The center of the north side holds a second, inner entrance used by the household itself, and the western half of the house is given over entirely to private family space. The eastern half serves guests, the western half daily life. The Agency for Cultural Affairs registered the building under the criterion of serving as a model of architectural form.
That a company still built its officers dedicated houses with formal guest rooms in 1959 says something about how long the customs of the prewar corporate world persisted in Japan's company towns.
Viewing the House and Exploring Hoshigoe
The interior of this residence is not currently open to visitors. The building can be viewed from the outside only, and even exterior viewing may be restricted depending on ongoing conservation work, so checking with Niihama City's Besshi Copper Mine Cultural Heritage Division before a visit is wise.
The district still rewards the trip. Four other registered buildings a short walk away do open their interiors on Sundays from 10:00 a.m. to noon, weekly from April through November and on the second and fourth Sundays from December through March: the former Besshi Mining Office director's residence with its main house, reception annex, and tea room, the former Sumitomo Chemical executive house of 1935, and two Western-style houses built in 1930 for foreign engineers. Admission is free and parking is provided.
From the hilltop Higurashi Villa Memorial Museum, relocated from Shisakajima Island and opened in 2018, the layout of the former company town spreads out below. The empty ground where some 290 houses once stood makes the six survivors, this quiet 1959 auditor's residence among them, easier to appreciate.
