The Eiheijiguchi Station Building
Echizen Railway Eiheijiguchi Station Building (えちぜん鉄道永平寺口駅本屋, Echizen-tetsudō Eiheijiguchi-eki Hon'ya) is a single-storey wooden station building at Higashifuruichi in Eiheiji Town, Fukui Prefecture, built in 1914 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 25 July 2011. It went up when the Echizen Electric Railway pushed its line from Fukui towards Katsuyama.
The building covers 122 square metres and measures 17 metres by 4.5 metres. It is entered on the gable end, the tsumairi arrangement, and faces east. The hipped tiled roof is swept down on the south side to serve as the platform canopy, and a small gabled roof projects over the front door.
The station opened as Eiheiji Station, the point where pilgrims left the train for the great Soto Zen monastery of Eiheiji. Later a branch railway made it an interchange for services towards Kanazu as well. Fukui Prefecture describes the Echizen Railway Eiheijiguchi Station Building as the principal station building on the line, and at 17 metres long it is close to twice the size of its neighbours.
Why it is registered
The registration criterion is that the building contributes to the historic landscape of the country. The Echizen Railway Eiheijiguchi Station Building shows, with little later alteration, how a small private railway of the 1910s received pilgrims arriving by train.
The interest lies in how Western detail is used. The outer walls are clapboard, painted white. Over the front entrance there is a carved transom, the eaves bracket has a decorative face, and the bargeboards and the interior ceiling were given the same treatment. The carcass is ordinary Japanese timber framing; the Western manner appears exactly where passengers would see it.
In 2014 a new station building opened on the other side of the tracks and the old one stopped working as a station. Instead of being demolished it became the Former Eiheijiguchi Station Community Hall, used for local gatherings and displays. The new building, white and vaguely Western in style, was designed to echo it.
What to look for
From the front, the gabled porch roof and the transom beneath it catch the eye first. This is where the money went in the Echizen Railway Eiheijiguchi Station Building, and the carved brackets under the eaves belong to the same effort.
Walk round to the south side. The main roof drops a step and continues as the platform canopy, built as one surface rather than added later, which is how station buildings of this period were put together.
Trains still run past the wall. Inside, photographs, documents and equipment from the station's working life are on show. Facing the building across the forecourt stands the red brick Former Kyoto Dento Furuichi Substation, which fed current to this railway; the two buildings stand in the same relation to each other as they did a century ago.
Visiting
The Echizen Railway Eiheijiguchi Station Building is open as a community hall and there is no admission charge. According to the Fukui Heritage Council, it is open while the station gate is open; the ticket window in the new building works all year from 6:20 a.m. to 7:50 p.m. The hall is sometimes booked for events, so check ahead if seeing the interior matters to you.
Trains on the Katsuyama Eiheiji Line reach Eiheijiguchi from Fukui Station in about 22 minutes during the day, roughly every 30 minutes. The car park in front holds 29 cars free of charge, 3 rental bicycles are kept at the station, and buses for the Eiheiji monastery leave from the forecourt.
Photographs work best from the forecourt, where the gable end and the porch sit square to the camera and the brick substation can be brought into the same frame. Shooting from the platform side needs a ticket; avoid flash towards moving trains and leave the tripod behind.
These times were checked in September 2026 and can change, so confirm them with Echizen Railway and Eiheiji Town before you travel.
