About the Former Uchiyama Family Residence Clothing Storehouse
The Former Uchiyama Family Residence Clothing Storehouse (旧内山家住宅衣装蔵, Kyū-Uchiyama-ke Jūtaku Ishōgura) is a 2-storey earthen-walled storehouse built around 1882 at 10-7 Shiromachi, Ono City, Fukui Prefecture, and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2018.
The Former Uchiyama Family Residence Clothing Storehouse stands southeast of the miso storehouse and backs onto the rice storehouse on its south side. It is a Dozo-zukuri storehouse with a gabled Sangawara-buki pantile roof and a building area of 53 m², the largest of the three storehouses on the estate. It was dismantled and rebuilt in 1993.
The One Storehouse Registered as a Model of Form
All three Uchiyama storehouses are Registered Tangible Cultural Properties, but not on the same grounds. The miso and rice storehouses were registered for their contribution to the historic landscape; the Former Uchiyama Family Residence Clothing Storehouse alone was registered as a model of form.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs gives two reasons: the careful finish of its openings, and a traditional build adapted to heavy snow. Kimono and other clothing were among a household's most valued possessions, and the building that held them was clearly not skimped on.
Plaster Frames and Braced Eaves
The walls of the Former Uchiyama Family Residence Clothing Storehouse are finished in white Shikkui plaster with Koshiita boarding at the base. The door is in the middle of the north wall, fronted by a Kuramae porch, and there are windows in both the east and west gables.
Look closely at the openings. Their edges are built up in plaster to form raised frames, so each window and the door stand out cleanly against the white wall. That is the finish the Agency singles out.
The eaves reach well out from the walls and are held up by angled braces (hōzue) set diagonally between wall and eave. They take the weight of snow on the eaves from below, while the overhang keeps rain and snow off the earthen walls. Ono City describes this detail, shared with the rice storehouse, as characteristic of the region.
