About the Former Uchiyama Family Residence Miso Storehouse
The Former Uchiyama Family Residence Miso Storehouse (旧内山家住宅味噌蔵, Kyū-Uchiyama-ke Jūtaku Misogura) is a 2-storey earthen-walled storehouse built around 1882 at 10-7 Shiromachi, Ono City, Fukui Prefecture, and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2018.
The Former Uchiyama Family Residence Miso Storehouse stands just south of the gate. It is a Dozo-zukuri storehouse with a gabled Sangawara-buki pantile roof and a building area of 24 m², the smallest of the six registered structures on the estate. It was dismantled and rebuilt in 1993.
An Indispensable Part of the Former Uchiyama Family Residence
The Former Uchiyama Family Residence Miso Storehouse was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes it as one of the storehouses used to keep food, and as an indispensable part of a traditional residence.
As the name says, this is where miso and other provisions were kept: a building that supported a large household from the background. Although it stands in a prominent spot beside the gate, it does not compete for attention; together with the gate it squares off the front of the estate.
A Storehouse That Keeps Itself Closed
The walls of the Former Uchiyama Family Residence Miso Storehouse are boarded below with Koshiita wainscoting and plastered above in white Shikkui. The purlins and rafters that carry the roof are left exposed rather than plastered over.
Openings are kept to a bare minimum. The only door is at the north end of the east wall, sheltered by a small lean-to Geya roof, and the south gable has just two small windows, one above the other. The Agency calls it a closed design.
Letting in as little light and air as possible was presumably the point, to keep the stored food from spoiling. Look at those two small windows and it is clear the building was made for its contents, not for people.

The Former Uchiyama Family Residence Miso Storehouse is best seen together with the gate. Walk round to the south gable to see both small windows and the line where the boarding meets the plaster, then to the north end of the east wall for the door under its lean-to.
