About the Former Uchiyama Family Residence Rice Storehouse
The Former Uchiyama Family Residence Rice Storehouse (旧内山家住宅米蔵, Kyū-Uchiyama-ke Jūtaku Komegura) is a single-storey earthen-walled storehouse built around 1882 at 10-7 Shiromachi, Ono City, Fukui Prefecture, and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2018.
The Former Uchiyama Family Residence Rice Storehouse occupies the southwest corner of the estate, on a corner where the plot meets the road. It is a Dozo-zukuri storehouse with a gabled Sangawara-buki pantile roof and a building area of 30 m², with the clothing storehouse against its north side. It was dismantled and rebuilt in 1993.
Holding the Street Corner
The Former Uchiyama Family Residence Rice Storehouse was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs notes that, standing on the corner of the plot along the road, it forms part of the old house's street front and helps create a historic streetscape.
The corner is where the outline of an estate shows most clearly. Putting a white-walled storehouse there makes the extent of the property easy to read from the road. This is the building that gives the estate its outward face.
A Low Storehouse Under Deep, Braced Eaves
The Former Uchiyama Family Residence Rice Storehouse is the only single-storey storehouse on the estate. Its walls are finished in Shikkui plaster with Koshiita boarding at the base, and its deep eaves rest on angled braces (hōzue).
The door is in the west gable, sheltered by a lean-to Geya roof, with a window opened in the middle of the gable. Because the building is kept low, it is the depth of the eaves and the row of braces beneath them that give it its character from outside.
Ono City describes braced eaves like these, found here and on the clothing storehouse, as a regional way of building. In a snowy town the eaves are pushed far out and their ends are propped from below on diagonal timbers; a practical answer to the climate ends up defining the look of the corner.
