What Is the Himeji City Museum of Literature Bokeitei?

The Himeji City Museum of Literature Bokeitei (Former Hamamoto Family Residence) is a modern Japanese-style villa on the grounds of the Himeji City Museum of Literature in Yamanoi-cho, Himeji, Hyogo Prefecture, built between 1916 and 1929 for the Hamamoto family of local entrepreneurs, and five of its structures (the Japanese-style room, tea house, corridor, gate and stone wall) were entered on Japan's register of Registered Tangible Cultural Properties in 2009.

In Japanese the name is written 姫路文学館望景亭(旧濱本家住宅), and the house itself is Bōkeitei, roughly "the pavilion for gazing at the view." The museum spells it Bokeitei in English. It sits in a quiet residential district northwest of Himeji Castle, near the hill known as Otokoyama. The museum buildings, designed by Ando Tadao, opened in April 1991, and Bokeitei survives behind them: a tiled-roof reception wing, a tea house and a garden pond, now run as an annex of the museum with rooms that can be booked for cultural events.

From a Merchant's Villa to a Museum Annex

According to the Himeji Film Commission, Bokeitei is what remains of a villa that took about 13 years to complete for a Himeji businessman of the Hamamoto family. The museum's English guide gives the construction dates as 1916 to 1929, and the National Film Archive of Japan's location database names the owner as Hamamoto Hachijiro (濱本八治郎).

After the Hamamotos, the house became the residence of Prince Kaya Tsunenori (賀陽宮恒憲王) while he commanded the Imperial Army's 10th Cavalry Regiment in Himeji. A 2026 report prepared for the city describes the Himeji City Museum of Literature Bokeitei as a building that once served almost as a guesthouse for distinguished visitors, imperial family members among them.

Himeji City acquired the property in 1958, and until 1976 it operated as the Otokoyama civic lodge, a popular wedding venue. When the city decided in 1987 to build the literature museum on the site, it kept roughly the western third of the old complex and restored the Japanese-style room, the tea house and the entrance with its curved karahafu gable. A Western-style reception room and other spaces were added in work carried out in 1990 and 1991. The city's report notes that a seismic assessment and a reinforcement design were completed in 2020.

The Five Registered Structures of Bokeitei

All five structures of the Himeji City Museum of Literature Bokeitei were registered together on August 7, 2009, under consecutive numbers 28-0394 to 28-0398. The Japanese-style room, tea house and gate were registered as models of architectural design; the corridor and stone wall as contributions to the historic landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs database lists them as follows.

  • Japanese-style room: early Taisho era. Single-storey timber building with a tiled roof; building area 177 m²
  • Tea house: early Taisho era. Single-storey timber building with a tiled roof; building area 55 m²
  • Corridor: early Taisho era. Single-storey timber structure with a tiled roof; building area 12 m²
  • Munamon gate: early Showa era, moved to its present position in 1991. Timber with a copper roof; 1.5 m wide
  • Stone wall: early Showa era. Stone with some brick; 64 m in total length

The database is not consistent about the gate. Its era field gives the move as Heisei 3, which is 1991, while its Western-calendar field reads 2001. Since the museum opened in 1991, this article follows the era field.

How the Bokeitei Grounds Fit Together

Read in sequence, the agency's descriptions sketch the layout of the Himeji City Museum of Literature Bokeitei. The gate stands at the eastern edge of the grounds, facing east toward the path that leads in from the main museum building. The Japanese-style room occupies the far western end, and the tea house faces it across the pond. The corridor joins the two in an L-shape, and beneath it runs a passage linking the gardens to its north and south. Along the southern and western edges of the garden, the stone wall separates an open lawn from the forecourt of the Japanese-style room before meeting the building itself.

Several unregistered features survive as well: the karahafu entrance, the reception room added in the Heisei-era work, and a covered waiting bench in the garden. The Himeji Film Commission counts eight brightly painted wooden door panels inside the buildings.

Himeji City has also chosen Bokeitei as one of its designated townscape views: the old house seen in autumn from the museum's second-floor terrace. The citizen who nominated it praised the way the solid buildings settle into the greenery around them. Details of each structure are on its own page.

Visiting the Himeji City Museum of Literature Bokeitei

The museum's English guide states that the rooms of the Himeji City Museum of Literature Bokeitei can be visited whenever they are not rented out. The city's report counts roughly 7,000 to 8,000 visitors a year coming to see the interiors. The museum does not say whether Bokeitei carries a separate charge; its permanent exhibition costs 450 yen for adults and is free for visitors under 18.

Hours are 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with last entry at 4:30 p.m. The museum closes on Mondays (opening if Monday is a national holiday), on the day after a national holiday (unless that day falls on a weekend), and from December 25 to January 5. The Japanese-style room, tea house and reception room are rented for cultural events such as tea gatherings, concerts and wedding portrait sessions, and the interiors may be closed on those days, so it is worth calling the museum (079-293-8228) before you go. The official guides say nothing about photography.

From the Shinki Bus terminal in front of JR and Sanyo Railway Himeji Station, buses from stops 9, 10, 17 and 18 reach Ichinohashi Bungakukan-mae in about 6 minutes, followed by a 4-minute walk north. Not every bus from these stops calls there, so check before boarding. The Himeji Castle loop bus from stop 6 takes about 10 minutes to Shimizubashi (Bungakukan-mae), 3 minutes' walk west of the museum. The museum has 50 free parking spaces, which can fill up.

In fiscal 2025 Himeji City studied seismic retrofitting of Bokeitei and its possible operation by a private partner, reporting in February 2026. Arrangements for visitors may change as a result, so check the museum's latest information before planning a trip.
