What Is the Bokeitei Japanese-Style Room?

The Himeji City Museum of Literature Bokeitei (Former Hamamoto Family Residence) Japanese-Style Room is a single-storey timber reception wing from the early Taisho era on the grounds of the Himeji City Museum of Literature in Yamanoi-cho, Himeji, Hyogo Prefecture, and it was entered on the national register of Registered Tangible Cultural Properties in 2009.

In Japanese it is 姫路文学館望景亭(旧濱本家住宅)和室, the washitsu of Bōkeitei. It is the main room block that survived when the Hamamoto family's villa was cut back to make way for the museum, and it stands at the far western end of the Bokeitei grounds. The building measures 14 by 11 meters, with a building area of 177 m², under a tiled Irimoya-zukuri hip-and-gable roof. Inside, an 18-mat formal room opens into a 12-mat anteroom, and a veranda with a low railing (Kōran) wraps around the outside.

Why the Japanese-Style Room Was Registered

The Bokeitei Japanese-Style Room was registered as a model of architectural design. The Agency for Cultural Affairs singles out two qualities. First, the whole building is lifted onto a tall base and laid out to open toward the garden, so that the view shapes the plan. Second, the finishing work, including the carved Ranma transoms above the sliding doors, is refined throughout. The agency calls it an elegant example of shoin-style architecture, the formal reception style of Japanese houses.

The museum itself advertises the Japanese-Style Room as a 40-mat space. The two rooms in the agency's description add up to 30 mats, and neither source explains how the larger figure is reached.

What to Look For in the Bokeitei Japanese-Style Room

Height is the first thing you notice. Because the floor of the Himeji City Museum of Literature Bokeitei Japanese-Style Room sits on a raised foundation, stepping out onto the veranda puts you slightly above the garden, looking across the pond to the roof of the tea house. With the partitions open, the two rooms become one long hall facing the view.

The Himeji Film Commission draws attention to the details: a full Tokonoma alcove in the inner room, and finely worked door pulls, transoms, shoin screens and horizontal tie beams. The glass doors along the garden side still hold old panes, apparently Japanese-made, whose faint ripples make the trees outside waver slightly as you move.

From the garden, look up at the building. The tall base and railed veranda raise the rooms a full step above the ground, and the broad irimoya roof sits on top. Next to the tea house and corridor, this wing is clearly the tallest structure on the grounds.

Visiting the Japanese-Style Room

The interior of the Bokeitei Japanese-Style Room can be seen on days when it is not rented. The museum hires it out for study groups and workshops, and it is also popular for wedding and coming-of-age portrait sessions and for concerts of traditional instruments. On event days you may not be able to go inside, so it is worth checking with the museum first. The official guides do not mention whether photography is allowed. Opening days and directions are on the main Himeji City Museum of Literature Bokeitei page.
