What Is the Bokeitei Stone Wall?

The Himeji City Museum of Literature Bokeitei (Former Hamamoto Family Residence) Stone Wall is an early Showa-era garden wall running along the southern and western edges of the Bokeitei garden on the grounds of the Himeji City Museum of Literature in Yamanoi-cho, Himeji, Hyogo Prefecture, and it was entered on the national register of Registered Tangible Cultural Properties in 2009.

In Japanese it is 姫路文学館望景亭(旧濱本家住宅)石垣, the Ishigaki of Bōkeitei. The wall bends from the south side of the garden around to the west and joins the Japanese-style room. It is 64 meters long and up to 1.5 meters high, built of stone with some brick, and a hedge is planted along its top. The register counts it as a single structure.

Why the Stone Wall Was Registered

The Bokeitei Stone Wall was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes its masonry of large natural stones laid in an irregular pattern, known as Ranzumi, and notes that it links the open lawn with the forecourt of the Japanese-style room. The agency sums it up as a wall of solid, weighty character.

It is not a building, yet it is this wall that defines the shape of the garden. Where the garden around the Japanese-style room, tea house and corridor ends and the open lawn begins is set by these 64 meters of stone and the hedge above them.

What to Look For in the Bokeitei Stone Wall

The stones of the Himeji City Museum of Literature Bokeitei Stone Wall are neither matched in shape nor sorted by size. Large natural boulders are stacked as they come, held in place by the way they lock against one another. At about 1.5 meters high, the wall puts each stone at eye level, so it is easy to study up close.

On the west side a gap 1.2 meters wide lets people pass between the lawn and the forecourt of the Japanese-style room. The wall that encloses the garden also provides the way into it.

Brick is used in part of the wall as well. The agency does not say where, so it is worth walking the length of the wall to find where natural stone gives way to brick.

Seeing the Stone Wall

Because the Bokeitei Stone Wall is an outdoor structure, it can be seen from the Bokeitei garden during museum hours. The official guides do not mention whether photography is allowed. Opening days and directions are on the main Himeji City Museum of Literature Bokeitei page.
