What Is the Bokeitei Corridor?
The Himeji City Museum of Literature Bokeitei (Former Hamamoto Family Residence) Corridor is a single-storey timber passage from the early Taisho era linking the Japanese-style room and the tea house on the grounds of the Himeji City Museum of Literature in Yamanoi-cho, Himeji, Hyogo Prefecture, and it was entered on the national register of Registered Tangible Cultural Properties in 2009.
In Japanese it is 姫路文学館望景亭(旧濱本家住宅)廊下, the rōka of Bōkeitei. The corridor turns at a right angle (Kaneore) to join the main room block with the tea house across the pond. It runs 9.6 meters, with a building area of 12 m², under a tiled Maneki-yane roof whose ridge is set off-center so that one slope reaches farther than the other. The outer walls are earthen plaster, with a lower band of mortar finished in Araidashi, washed to expose the aggregate.
Why the Corridor Was Registered
The Bokeitei Corridor was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape. What the Agency for Cultural Affairs singles out is its base. Gardens lie on both its north and south sides, and a path between them passes underneath, so the lower part of the corridor is built as an arch to span it.
The result is a structure that does two jobs. Indoors it is a passage between two buildings; outdoors it is a small bridge over a garden path. The agency describes the arched base as giving the Himeji City Museum of Literature Bokeitei Corridor its distinctive appearance.
What to Look For in the Bokeitei Corridor
Seen from the garden, the Bokeitei Corridor is built up in three layers. At the bottom is a foundation of natural stones set to look randomly stacked, in the manner of Ranzumi masonry. Above it rise the washed-mortar band and the earthen walls. On top sits the asymmetric roof, its longer slope reaching out over one side.
From the garden path, the arch appears as an opening under the corridor, almost like a small gateway, and it is this opening that ties the north and south gardens together.
Inside, the corridor is the route from the tea house to the Japanese-style room. As the Himeji Film Commission describes it, crossing the corridor from the tea house brings you out into the wide two-room hall. Walking it in that order is the easiest way to understand how the surviving buildings fit together.
Visiting the Corridor
Visitors can walk through the Bokeitei Corridor as part of a tour of the buildings on days when the Japanese-style room and tea house are not rented. The arched base is best seen from the garden. On event days the corridor may also be closed. The official guides do not mention whether photography is allowed. Opening days and directions are on the main Himeji City Museum of Literature Bokeitei page.
