What Is the Bokeitei Tea House?

The Himeji City Museum of Literature Bokeitei (Former Hamamoto Family Residence) Tea House is a single-storey timber tea house from the early Taisho era on the grounds of the Himeji City Museum of Literature in Yamanoi-cho, Himeji, Hyogo Prefecture, and it was entered on the national register of Registered Tangible Cultural Properties in 2009.

In Japanese it is 姫路文学館望景亭(旧濱本家住宅)茶室, the Chashitsu of Bōkeitei. It faces the Japanese-style room across the garden pond. The building measures 8.1 by 6.9 meters, with a building area of 55 m², and holds an eight-mat tea room and a Mizuya preparation room. Its tiled Kirizuma-zukuri gable roof is ringed by a lower lean-to roof (Geya), which gives it the same layered silhouette as the larger building opposite.

Why the Tea House Was Registered

The Bokeitei Tea House was registered as a model of architectural design. The Agency for Cultural Affairs points to the wide openings on the garden side and to small refinements such as the boat-hull ceiling in front of the area beside the alcove, and describes it as an open, airy piece of tea architecture.

The agency also notes that the lean-to roof was used to bring the tea house into harmony with the Japanese-style room. Seen across the pond, the two buildings, one large and one small, read almost as a matched pair.

What to Look For in the Bokeitei Tea House

Many visitors picture a Japanese tea room as a dim, cramped space entered through a crawl-in door. The eight-mat room of the Himeji City Museum of Literature Bokeitei Tea House works the other way: broad openings face the garden, so the pond and the trees stay in view even while you are seated on the mats.

The Himeji Film Commission describes the approach from the corridor. A brightly painted wooden door panel greets you head-on, and the preparation room and eight-mat tea room open to the right. The ceiling is woven ajiro work, raised into a boat-hull shape only in front of the side alcove, and even the pulls on the paper screens are carefully made. The article sees the room as a faithful picture of a wealthy family's tea setting between the Taisho era and the years before the war.

A covered waiting bench also survives in the garden, where invited guests would sit before being called in to the tea.

Visiting the Tea House

The Bokeitei Tea House can be seen on days when it is not rented. It is hired out for tea gatherings, and on those days the interior may be closed. For the best view of the exterior, stand on the veranda of the Japanese-style room across the pond, where the overlapping roofs of the tea house are easy to read. The official guides do not mention whether photography is allowed. Opening days and directions are on the main Himeji City Museum of Literature Bokeitei page.
