Zuiganji Temple at a Glance

Zuiganji Temple (瑞巖寺) is a Rinzai Zen temple in Matsushima, Matsushima Town, Miyagi District, Miyagi Prefecture, revived by Date Masamune and completed in 1609; its main hall (former abbot's quarters) and its kuri and corridor are National Treasures, and its Onari Gate, Middle Gate and Godaido Hall are Important Cultural Properties. The address is 91 Chonai, Matsushima.

According to the Agency for Cultural Affairs, Zuiganji is said to have been founded in 828 by the monk Ennin and was first called Enpukuji. It became a Zen temple in 1248 and later fell into decline, until Date Masamune, who had moved into Sendai Castle in 1601, laid out its revival himself from 1604. The temple's website says the work took five years and was completed in 1609.

How the Precinct Is Laid Out

According to Miyagi Prefecture, passing through the Middle Gate into the inner courtyard brings you face to face with the main hall, with the kuri and corridor to the right and the Onari entrance to the left. The Onari Gate stands in front of the Onari entrance, and the Onari Gate and Middle Gate are linked by walls known as taikobei. The kuri stands to the front right of the main hall and is connected to it by an L-shaped corridor, the Agency notes.

Godaido Hall stands apart from these buildings on a small islet on the Matsushima shore, reached by bridges known as the Sukashi-bashi. Miyagi Prefecture reports that the three bridges to Godaido underwent major repairs in fiscal 2023 and 2024 and reopened in March 2025.

Designated Structures

Five entries are designated. The main hall was first protected under earlier law in 1900 and became a National Treasure in 1953; the kuri and corridor were protected in 1903 and became a National Treasure in 1959. The Onari Gate and Middle Gate were designated in 1900 and Godaido Hall in 1901. Each gate includes two taikobei walls as attached items, and Godaido includes its shrine cabinet and ridge tablet.

Godaido dates from 1604 and the other four from around 1609, all from Masamune's revival. Miyagi Prefecture describes Godaido as the oldest Momoyama-period building in the Sendai area.
