A Momoyama Hall on an Islet in Matsushima Bay
The Zuiganji Temple Godaido Hall (瑞巖寺五大堂, Zuiganji godaido) is a Buddhist hall of Zuiganji standing on a small islet on the shore of Matsushima, Matsushima Town, Miyagi Prefecture, built by Date Masamune in 1604 and designated an Important Cultural Property on March 27, 1901. Its shrine cabinet and a ridge tablet are designated as attached items.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs records it as 3 ken by 3 ken, a single storey under a pyramidal (hogyo) tiled roof, with a porch of 1 ken at the front. Miyagi Prefecture notes a ridge tablet dated the sixth day of the twelfth month of 1604 and calls it the oldest Momoyama-period building in the Sendai area; the temple describes it as the oldest surviving Momoyama building in the Tohoku region.
Why Godaido Matters
Godaido was designated an Important Cultural Property in 1901. According to Miyagi Prefecture, it is built of unpainted wood, a square hall of 3 ken with a front porch and a balustraded veranda all round. Its eaves project far and its proportions are calm overall. The frog-leg struts above the porch beam, the beam ends and brackets, and the struts and zodiac carvings on all four sides are vigorous.
Inside, an elaborately crafted, painted house-shaped shrine cabinet holds images of the Five Wisdom Kings from the mid to late Heian period, the prefecture says. The temple attributes them to the monk Ennin and shows them only once every 33 years, next in 2039.
What to Look For
The highlight is the carving on the frog-leg struts around the eaves. According to the temple, the twelve zodiac animals are carved in their compass directions, so you can walk around the hall to find your own sign.
The plaque on the front reads Godaido with an unusual character, 五太堂 rather than 五大堂; the temple explains that this was likely a playful touch by its writer, the temple's 105th abbot, Tenrei Shoku. The hall is reached by bridges known as the Sukashi-bashi, and from the islet the islands of Matsushima Bay spread out around you.
Visiting Godaido
Godaido stands on the shore apart from Zuiganji's main buildings and is reached by crossing the Sukashi-bashi. Miyagi Prefecture reports that the three bridges to Godaido were repaired in fiscal 2023 and 2024 and reopened on March 15, 2025.
According to nippon.com, Godaido can be visited free from 8:00 a.m. until sunset. The Five Wisdom Kings inside are hidden images shown only once every 33 years. Temple seals (goshuin) for Godaido are issued at Zuiganji's seal office, according to the temple's website.
