What the Shioya Brewery Detached Wing Is

The Shioya Brewery Detached Wing (塩屋醸造離れ, Shioya Jōzō Hanare) is a late Meiji reception wing at 537 Oaza Suzaka, Suzaka City, Nagano Prefecture, standing southeast of the main house of the Shioya miso and soy sauce brewery, and was listed as Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 15 May 2007. It is a single-storey timber building with a gabled pantile roof and covers 45 square metres.

It sits southeast of the main house and is joined to it by a corridor. It measures 5 by 2 and a half bays. Inside, a corridor runs along the south side beside the garden, and behind it lie a 6-mat Zashiki reception room with a Tokonoma alcove and an 8-mat anteroom.

The Agency for Cultural Affairs dates it to the late Meiji era, with alterations in 2003. It is the only one of the ten listed buildings recorded as late Meiji.

Why It Was Listed

The Shioya Brewery Detached Wing was listed for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs notes its exterior finished with a middle coat of plaster and its part in the scenery of the domestic side of the premises.

On a brewer's lot, this is the one building used neither for trade nor for brewing. A garden corridor and a reception room with an alcove and an anteroom point to a wing for receiving guests or for the family's own leisure.

Most of the listed buildings went up between the late Edo period and early Meiji; the wing is a step later. It belongs to the years of Suzaka's silk boom, when, with the shop and brewery in place, the household could afford to add formal rooms on the domestic side.

What to Look For

Notice how the plan is put together. The Shioya Brewery Detached Wing runs a corridor along its south side, with the 6-mat reception room and 8-mat anteroom in a row behind it. The reception room is the smaller of the two but carries the alcove that marks its rank. Looking out across the corridor to the garden, it takes its light and its view from the south in the classic manner.

Note too that it is connected to the main house by a corridor. Detached in name, it could be reached under cover from the house and was treated as an extension of it.

The exterior keeps a middle coat of plaster rather than the white sealed finish of the main house. It turns a quieter face toward the garden than the buildings on the street.

Visiting

The Shioya Brewery Detached Wing stands on the domestic side of the premises, and no public access is advertised (checked 27 September 2026). It is not named among the stops on the free brewery tour.

It lies deep in the southeast of the lot, facing the garden, and cannot be seen from the city road.
