What the Shioya Brewery Shop and Main House Is

The Shioya Brewery Shop and Main House (塩屋醸造店舗及び主屋, Shioya Jōzō Tenpo oyobi Shuoku) is an early Meiji merchant building at 537 Oaza Suzaka, Suzaka City, Nagano Prefecture, combining the shop and the family home of the Shioya miso and soy sauce brewery, and was listed as Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 15 May 2007. It is a timber building, single storey with a partial upper floor, under a gabled roof of pantiles, and covers 210 square metres, the largest footprint of the ten buildings listed on the site.

It stands along the city road facing north. About 6 bays wide and 11 bays deep, it puts the shop at the front, entered from the long side in the Hirairi manner, with the family's living quarters running back behind it. Shop and house under one roof is the standard arrangement of a Japanese town merchant.

The Agency for Cultural Affairs dates the building to the early Meiji era and records alterations in 1952. The shop is still in use as the Shioya Brewery outlet.

Why It Was Listed

The Shioya Brewery Shop and Main House was listed for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency's note points to its large merchant-house exterior and the part it plays in the streetscape.

Suzaka City presents the row of soy sauce storehouse, uwamise, gate and shop as the backbone of Shinmachi's historic street. The shop and main house holds the east end of that row and has the widest frontage of the four, so it is the public face of the whole Shioya premises.

A lean-to roof, Geya, runs across the 6-bay front, and the upper walls and eaves are sealed in plaster. It is a timber townhouse, but its upper parts are clad in earth as a guard against fire, which gives it a weight suited to a shop standing in front of a yard full of brewing storehouses.

What to Look For

Start on the far side of the road and take in the whole front. The line of the lean-to roof over the ground floor and the white plastered wall of the upper floor above it form two horizontal bands. Compare it with the uwamise next door to the west, whose upper eaves are carried out on projecting beams in the Degeta-zukuri manner, and the Shioya Brewery Shop and Main House reads as the quieter, wall-faced neighbour.

Its depth is nearly double its width, and that proportion says a lot. Street frontage was limited and expensive, so merchants stretched their buildings back from the road to fit in both the shop and the household. Step inside the shop and you get a sense of that depth.

The 1952 alterations recorded by the Agency came in the years just after the war. Read the building as an early Meiji frame adjusted for Showa-era trade and you can see how it has stayed in business all along.

Visiting

The shop part of the Shioya Brewery Shop and Main House operates as the brewery's outlet and is open to customers during business hours. The living quarters behind it are private.

The exterior can be seen from the city road at any time. Because the front faces north, it is rarely in shadow against the light, and the white upper storey shows well from the south side of the street.
