What the Shioya Brewery Small Document Storehouse Is

The Shioya Brewery Small Document Storehouse (塩屋醸造小文庫蔵, Shioya Jōzō Kobunkogura) is an early Meiji storehouse for household goods at 537 Oaza Suzaka, Suzaka City, Nagano Prefecture, standing east of the main house of the Shioya miso and soy sauce brewery, and was listed as Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 15 May 2007. It is a two-storey Dozo-zukuri storehouse with a gabled pantile roof and covers 25 square metres, the smallest of the ten listed buildings on the site.

It stands to the east of the main house, facing west, and measures 3 by 2 and a half bays. The roof sits on a Japanese frame, Wagoya, and the exterior is finished with a middle coat of plaster.

The Agency for Cultural Affairs classes it as residential. It belonged to the house rather than the brewery and held the family's belongings.

Why It Was Listed

The Shioya Brewery Small Document Storehouse was listed for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes it as simply built overall, but with a carefully shaped doorframe and a small roof over the entrance carried on moulded brackets, Mochiokuri.

It is a storehouse that spends its decoration in one place. The walls are left in plain plaster; the ornament is gathered around the door and the canopy above it, the one spot people approach and touch.

It makes a clear contrast with the Document Storehouse south of the main house, finished in tiled panels and black plaster. Two storehouses of different rank on the same domestic side hint at their different roles.

What to Look For

Look at the entrance. On the Shioya Brewery Small Document Storehouse the doorframe is carefully shaped and a canopy projects above it. The brackets beneath the canopy are carved with curved mouldings. In a building of plain walls, this is the one place worked in detail.

Take in the scale as well. At 25 square metres it is about one seventh the size of the Miso Storehouse, which covers 185 square metres. The brewing storehouses were built to the scale of production; a household store only had to be big enough for what it held.

Its west-facing orientation also tells you something: the door turns toward the main house, placed for easy access from the living quarters.

Visiting

The Shioya Brewery Small Document Storehouse stands on the domestic side of the premises, and no public access is advertised (checked 27 September 2026). It is not named among the stops on the free brewery tour.

Tucked behind the main house to the east, it is hard to see from the city road.
