A hall for worshipping the Yumedono
The Horyuji Temple Eastern Precinct Raido Hall (法隆寺東院礼堂, Hōryū-ji Tōin Raidō) in Ikaruga, Nara Prefecture, is an early Kamakura-period hall built in 1231 and designated an Important Cultural Property on April 7, 1900. It stands south of the octagonal Yumedono at the heart of the Eastern Precinct.
Five bays by four, it has a single gabled tile roof. As its name says, a raidō is a worship hall: a place for people to gather and pray in front of the building that holds the sacred image.
What a raido is for
Putting a separate worship hall in front of a main hall is a practice seen at temples of the Nara and Heian periods. The Horyuji Eastern Precinct Raido is one such building, set facing the Yumedono so that worshippers could gather before its main image, the Kuse Kannon.
In the early Kamakura period the Eastern Precinct gained several new buildings, the Raido and the Shariden and Edono of 1219 among them. Their dates show a fresh surge of devotion to Prince Shōtoku at that time.
The long, plain gabled roof also serves as a foil for the octagonal roof and jewel finial of the Yumedono behind it.
What to look for
From the front, five evenly spaced bays sit under a level tiled roof. Turn around from the Yumedono and you can see how the Raido roof draws the southern edge of the precinct.
The building makes most sense in relation to the Yumedono. Stand on the line between them and compare their heights.
Visiting
The Raido is within the Eastern Precinct ticket area and is seen from outside. The precinct is busiest during the spring and autumn showings of the Kuse Kannon in the Yumedono.
Hours, tickets, directions and Yumedono opening dates are on the Horyuji page.
