A 19-bay building west of the cloister
The Horyuji Temple Sankyoin and West Dormitory (法隆寺三経院及び西室, Hōryū-ji Sangyōin oyobi Nishimuro) in Ikaruga, Nara Prefecture, is an early Kamakura-period building west of the Western Precinct cloister, rebuilt in 1231, first protected on April 23, 1908, and designated a National Treasure on February 2, 1955.
One long north-south building 19 bays in length, it has the Sankyoin, a lecture hall, in its southern 7 bays and the West Dormitory in the northern 12. It is 5 bays deep at the front and 4 at the back, single-storey and gabled, entered from the gable end, with a tile roof. A ridge tag is designated with it.
From dormitory to lecture hall
When the temple was first laid out, this building stood closer to the West Corridor and was entirely monks' quarters. It burned between 1077 and 1081; the present building was rebuilt in 1231, according to the ridge-beam inscription. Ink marks under the columns suggest the rear dormitory section followed a little later, probably in 1268.
The Sankyoin takes its name from the three sutras lectured on here, the Lotus, Śrīmālā and Vimalakīrti sutras; the Japan Tourism Agency's commentary links it to the commentaries on those sutras attributed to Prince Shōtoku. The interior was refitted in 1305 and 1349 and repartitioned many times after that. The Showa-era restoration returned only the Sankyoin to its earlier form; the dormitory got its exterior back, but inside only the rows of columns were restored, leaving one open room.
A house-like hall and a dormitory front
The value of the Horyuji Sankyoin and West Dormitory lies in keeping two different building types in one structure. The Sankyoin is a residential-style hall recalling the wings of aristocratic shinden mansions, with railed verandas on three sides, an open deep porch and hinged lattice shutters across its five front bays. The dormitory, with its rhythm of doors and slatted windows (renji-mado), preserves the outward look of a dormitory built in two-bay units per monk.
Round columns sit on natural stones; the brackets are simple capitals with bracket arms and the eaves single-layer square rafters. The porch has broadly chamfered square posts with boat-shaped bracket arms and widely spaced rafters. Only the northernmost bay of the dormitory has an earth floor; the rest is boarded.
According to the Japan Tourism Agency's commentary, from May 16 to August 15 each year the monks hold the ango retreat in the West Dormitory, lecturing on the three sutras.
